INSULT OR NO INSULT ? – REPLY TO DR. NARENDRAN BY S.M.M.Bazeer
Dear Editor,
I have read Dr. Rajesingam’s reply to my article commenting on his article titled “CONSTITUTIONAL CHANGES IN SRI LANKA cabaret Dance by Burqa clad! ”. I believe the contention centered on the metaphor that he used to reflect his point of view was out of context. It seems that Dr. Narendran is again missing the point as he attempts to circumvent his argument by dragging the Abaya clad masquerading men to justify his use of metaphors which is indeed an insult to women who are dressed in Burqas. I leave Dr. Narendran’s reply to the discerning Thenee readers to adjudge whether his argument is logical in terms of the use of language with regards to women folk who follow certain religious or cultural traditions.
I stand by what I understood that Dr. Narendran wrote about women is insinuating the womenfolk in general.

அபாயா ((Abaya)அணிந்து மாறுவேடமிட்டு செல்லும் ஆண்களை பற்றி கூறி தனது உவமானத்தை நியாயப்படுத்த விவாதத்தை சுற்றிவளைத்து இழுத்துச்செல்லும் முயற்சி மூலம் கலாநிதி நரேந்திரன் மீண்டும் தனது விவாதப்புள்ளியை தவறவிடுகிறார் என்றே தோன்றுகிறது. இது உண்மையில் பெண்களை அவமரியாதைப்படுத்துவதாகும். கலாநிதி நரேந்திரன் அவர்களின் பதிலை பகுத்துணரும் தேனீ வாசகர்கள் ஒரு குறிப்பிட்ட சமய கலாச்சார மரபுகளை பின்பற்றும் பெண்களை பற்றி அவரின் மொழிப்பிரயோகம் குறித்த வாதம் தர்க்கரீதியானதா என்பதை தீர்மானிக்குமாறு விட்டுவிடுகிறேன். பொதுவாக பெண்களை அவமரியாதைபபடுத்தும் வகையில் கலாநிதி நரேந்திரன் எழுதியுள்ளார் என்ற எனது புரிந்துணர்வின் சார்புநிலையை நான் கொண்டுள்ளேன்.
கலாநிதி நரேந்திரன் அவர்களின் பதிலையும் கீழே பதிவிலிட்டுள்ளேன்.
No insult was meant to women in general
Dear Editor,
Thanks for publishing the Tamil translation of my article. I have read MR.S.M.M. Basheer’s comment on my article. No insult was meant to women in general or to those women wearing the ‘Burqa’ or similar dress forms as a religious or cultural requirement. If this inference has been drawn, it is mistaken. There are women in scant clothes performing cabaret as a form of entertainment and in this example the clothing was portrayed as much more substantial-similar to a Burqa. I hope the intent is understood, in the context of the sentence. The phrase “cabaret by Burqa-clad’ was used to highlight a situation where the Sri Lankan government has been secretive about the constitutional changes it is contemplating-revealing only bits and pieces of the unimportant at intervals. Further, in the middle-east, instances of men wearing the ‘Abhaya’ to masquerade as women are reported in newspapers. This does not mean there is anything fundamentally wrong with women wearing the ‘Abhaya’. These report indicate only that this dress form is sometimes misused with ulterior motives.
